Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the role of gender in moderating the relationship between entrepreneurial mindset and entrepreneurial intention among undergraduate business students in Bangkok. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The quantitative sample consisted of 400 undergraduate students, while the qualitative data were collected from 17 key informants.

Quantitative analysis revealed that components of entrepreneurial mindset—namely Alertness to Opportunity, Risk Propensity, Ambiguity Tolerance —were positively correlated with entrepreneurial intention at a statistically significant low to moderate level. In contrast, Dispositional Optimism, and Creativity showed weaker correlations. Multiple regression analysis indicated that alertness to opportunity has a significant effect on entrepreneurial intention (β = .303, p < .001). This suggests that as an individual's level of alertness to opportunity increases, their entrepreneurial intention increases accordingly. Furthermore, gender plays a moderating role in this relationship. The results indicate that being female tends to reduce the influence of Alertness to Opportunity on entrepreneurial intention (β = –.218, p = .004). Other variables showed no significant effects. Qualitative findings suggested that male and female participants responded differently to entrepreneurial mindset components and entrepreneurial intention. Male students emphasized Risk Propensity, while female students focused more on Ambiguity Tolerance. Participants identifying as gender-diverse were in the early stages of planning their business and emphasized the importance of Dispositional Optimism.

The research findings revealed a consistency between quantitative and qualitative data, indicating that alertness to opportunity is the most significant factor influencing entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, gender plays a crucial role as a significant moderator, particularly in diminishing the link between positive cognitions and actionable intent.
