Evaluating student engagement and performing arts skills in a performing arts course with a Problem-Based Learning approach

Abstract
This study evaluates student engagement and performing arts skills the course the Principles of Performing Arts Practice and Management after the Problem-Based Learning approach has been implemented. The participants are composed of twenty-two (22) third year second semester student in the Bachelor of Arts in Communication Management International Program, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University, of academic year 2017. Mixed method of research is utilized by means of pre-test and post-test questionnaires, observation, and practical test. Problem-based learning approach is employed by setting up a problem for the students to explore, while data are collected through observation. Students’ performing arts skills are assessed at the end of the course. Quantitative and qualitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics and a priori codes analysis, The results show that problem-based learning helps increase student engagement in the classroom, especially in terms of confidence, as well as builds excellent performing arts skills
