การศึกษาเรื่อง สัญลักษณ์ในงานจิตรกรรมวานิทัสครั้งนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ ศึกษาความหมายของสัญลักษณ์ในงานจิตรกรรมวานิทัส และจำแนกประเภทสัญลักษณ์ในงานจิตรกรรมวานิทัส โดยศึกษาจากผลงานจิตรกรรมหุ่นนิ่งที่นำเสนอแนวคิดวานิทัสของจิตรกรชาวดัตช์ในศตวรรษที่ 17 ประกอบกับวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลจากเอกสารเป็นหลัก จากการศึกษาพบว่า ความหมายของสัญลักษณ์ในงานจิตรกรรมวานิทัสมักนำเสนอเพื่อเป็นภาพแทนสภาวะสิ่งชั่วคราวบนโลกมนุษย์ สะท้อนถึงความกังวลด้านการดำรงอยู่ของชีวิต ความสุข ความเพลิดเพลิน ชื่อเสียง ความรู้ ทรัพย์สิน และอำนาจทางโลก ในขณะเดียวกันยังปรากฏภาพสัญลักษณ์ของพระคริสต์เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงหนทางแห่งความรอด การสื่อความหมายเหล่านี้สัมพันธ์ไปกับเศรษฐกิจ วิถีวัฒนธรรม และความเชื่อทางศาสนาของชาวดัตช์ที่มีต่อนิกายโปรเตสแตนต์ ถือเป็นการถ่วงดุลระหว่างชีวิตทางโลกกับความศรัทธาทางธรรม ผลงานโดดเด่นด้วยการสื่อความหมายเตือนใจถึงความอนิจจังของสรรพสิ่ง ย้อนแย้งกับการนำเสนอภาพความงามของวัตถุที่ชวนให้ลุ่มหลง การจำแนกประเภทสัญลักษณ์ในงานจิตรกรรมวานิทัส อาศัยเกณฑ์ในการจำแนกตามการสื่อสารความหมายของสัญลักษณ์ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภท ได้แก่ 1. ความไม่ยั่งยืนของชีวิตและความตาย 2. ความเป็นอยู่ทางโลก 3. การฟื้นคืนพระชนม์
