The Development of Creative Problem-Solving Skills of Grade 8 Students through Problem-Based Learning on Renewable Energy

Abstract
This action research aimed to examine a problem-based learning (PBL) approach and to develop the creative problem-solving skills of Grade 8 students in the topic of renewable energy. The target group consisted of 21 Grade 8 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included lesson plans, a semi-structured classroom observation form, activity worksheets, and students’ work artifacts. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, and data credibility was ensured through methodological triangulation. The findings revealed that the problem-based learning approach designed to enhance creative problem-solving skills consisted of seven stages: problem identification, problem clarification, data collection, generating problem-solving approaches, implementing solutions, evaluation and decision-making, and presentation and reflection. The results also indicated that the problems used in learning activities should be relevant and closely related to students’ real-life contexts in order to effectively promote creative problem-solving. Furthermore, students demonstrated improvement in creative problem-solving skills across components. The most developed component was the generation of diverse and creative ideas for problem-solving, followed by the evaluation and refinement of proposed solutions.
