Place-Based Learning Approach on Humans, Natural Resources, and the Environment to Promote Environmental Science Competency for Grade 10Th Students

Abstract

The purposes this research aims to study the learning management approach based on the concept of place-based education to promote environmental science competence, and to study the result of learning management based on the place-based education on the topic of humans, natural resources, and the environment to promote environmental science competency for 36 students, 10th grade in a sub-district school in Nakhon Sawan province. The research instruments consisted of learning management plans using a place with natural resources and environmental problems from the water chestnut farming of villagers in Nong Krot sub-district, a learning management reflection form, activity sheets, and an environmental science competence test. The content analysis was used and the reliability of the data was triangulated. The results of the research found that stimulating students to start to be aware of environmental problems in local places by studying example situations with characteristics of real environmental problems in Nong Krot village, using questions to stimulated analytical thinking about issues related to local environmental problems from the collected data, searching for information on appropriate solutions and natural resource conservation methods for the place, solving environmental problems and disseminating knowledge, cooperated assessment with the people in the place, and cooperated summarizing and discussing the results of the activities. In addition, it was found that students who received learning management based on the concept of place-based education had an increase in environmental science competence from basic to high levels.
