Efficiency of a Self-study Package of English Pronunciation: Stress in English for English Major Students

Abstract

This study aimed to 1) develop a self-study package of English pronunciation: Stress in English for English Major Students at Phranakhon Rajabhat University 2) compare learning achievement before and after using the self-study package of English pronunciation: Stress in English 3) examine students’ satisfaction with the teaching and learning of the self-study package of English pronunciation: stress in English. The participants were 60 first-year students who enrolled in the English Phonetics course at PNRU in the second semester of the academic year 2021. Thirty students were obtained by means of purposive sampling. The experiment period was 4 weeks. The research instruments consisted of 1) a self-study package of English pronunciation: Stress in English 2) a pretest and a posttest on English consonant pronunciation 3) a satisfaction form. The statistics utilized in this study were the mean, standard deviation, and t-test. In the first week of the experiment, the pretest was administered to the students. In the second week until the third week, they studied a unit of stress in English and used the self-study package of English pronunciation: Stress in English. In week 4, the students took the posttest and questionnaire. The
findings revealed that the learning packages gained an efficiency (E1/E2) of 80.13/80.50. The students’ ability was better. Their posttest score was higher than the pretest, at the 0.05level of significance. Overall, undergraduates’ satisfaction with the teaching and learning of the self-study
package of English pronunciation: Stress in English was at a high level.
