Abstract

This experimental research aims 1) to design the workbook for promoting reading for main idea skill of the students in the program of teaching profession to meet the effectiveness criterion of 70/70. 2) to compare the reading achievement score of the students in the program of teaching profession before and after utilizing the workbook for promoting reading for main idea skill 3) to investigate the students’ satisfaction towards utilizing the workbook for promoting reading for main idea skill. The sample of this study was 30 students in the program of teaching profession who took the course 262-507 English Language for Teaching Profession Students in the second semester of 2018 academic year with low achievement in English. The experiment was conducted within 8 periods in the second semester of the academic year. The instruments of this study were the skill practice book for identifying main idea, the lesson plans, the pre- and post- tests of reading for main idea achievement and the satisfaction questionnaire. The statistics used in this study were IOC, percentage, means, standard division, and t-test.


The results showed that 1) the efficiency of the workbook is E1/E2 =75.57/72.22 which is higher than the required rate E1/E2 =70/70 2) The reading achievement scores of the students before and after utilizing the practice book were significantly different at the 0.05 level 3) The students’ satisfaction towards using skill practice book in promoting reading for main idea was at the high level.
