The Roles of Monks in Morals and Ethics Development: A Case Study of Woranari Chaloem School, Songkhla Province

Abstract

The objective of this quantitative research was to study the opinions of students at Woranaree Chalerm Songkhla School towards the role of monks in the development of morality and ethics.  360 copies of the questionnaire were used as a research instrument to collect data from the sample of students in lower and upper secondary education levels at Woranaree Chalerm Songkhla School. Data collected were then analyzed using statistics, including percentage and content analysis.


The results showed that the majority of the respondents were female (n= 233, 64.7%). There were 127 males (35.3%). Most of them were under 15 years old (n= 162, 45.0%), 15-17 years old (n= 149, 41.4%), and 17 years old and older (n=49, 13.6%). Most of them are studying in upper secondary education level (grade 10-12) (n= 182, 50.6%) and lower secondary education level (grade 7-9) (n=178, 49.4%). 159 respondents had their academic achievement of higher 3.00 (44.2%). 146 respondents had their academic achievement of between 2.50 - 3.00 (40.6%). 55 respondents had their academic achievement of lower 2.50 (15.3%).


Overall opinion of the respondents towards the roles of monks in the development of morals and ethics was at a high level with a total mean of 4.26 and a standard deviation of 0.66. When individual aspects were considered, an aspect with the highest mean was teaching and learning for students’ morality and ethics development with a mean of 4.42 and a standard deviation of 0.67, followed by moral and ethical evaluation with a mean of 4.29 and a standard deviation of 0.73 and lastly, environmental management in schools for the moral and ethical development with a mean of 4.16 and a standard deviation 0.74.
