Creating an Active Environments for the Bike and Walk Friendly Community

Abstract
The goal of this action research project was to develop walk-and-bike-friendly communities. The study area are Nong Chai Wan Community and Suksabaijai community both area are located in Kalasin Municipality, Kalasin Province. This project has been operating continuously for the third year. There were three purposes of this project: 1) to study the model for designing and improving public spaces, 2) to study the people’s public space use behaviors, and 3) study the attitudes that arise from changes in the physical environment. The results of the study showed that 1) the main guidelines for improving public spaces consist of wall art Painting and traffic line drawing Together with the guidelines for Placemaking through the participation of people in the community. 2) The use of the public areas in the community (65.55%), where the location of the community public areas near the houses affected the use. The distance between a group of houses and public spaces also influences travel patterns. The main activity of using public spaces and communities is exercise (68.71%). 3) The factor that has the greatest influence on the use of public spaces in are the safety of use, a sufficient amount of lighting, usefulness in exercise, the beauty of scenery and aesthetics. Furthermore, Measures to influence the transformation of the area are Traffic marking painting (90.6 percent), wall art (84.9 percent).
