A Development of the Argumentation – Based STEM Learning Model to Enhance the STEM Habits of Mind for Seventh Grade Students

Abstract
STEM Habits of Mind is the way of thinking that focuses on the integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to solve problems in the real world. To solve problem effectively, argumentation is required for logical decision making. This research was Research & Development research. The objectives of this research were: 1) to development the argumentation-based STEM Learning model to enhance the STEM habits of mind; and 2) to evaluate the consistency and appropriateness of the developed learning model. The study group were 5 experts in STEM Education and science teaching. The research tools included: 1) the development the argumentation-based STEM Learning model to enhance the STEM habits of mind; and 2) the consistency and appropriateness evaluation form. Data were collected by having the experts evaluate the model via E-mail. Statistical analysis used for data analysis included mean and standard deviation.
The research results were as follows: 1) the argumentation-based STEM Learning model to enhance the STEM habits of mind consisted of six steps: Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, Evaluation, and Reflection of STEM habits of mind. 2) The evaluation by the experts showed that Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) for each item ranged from 0.60 to 1.00, and the overall appropriateness was rated at a high level (x̄= 4.17, S.D = 0.82). These results indicate that the development model was aligned with the principle of STEM and argumentation-based learning and could be used to enhance STEM habits of mind in actual learning.
