Abstract

Developing essential learner competencies, particularly intercultural communicative competence, requires English language teachers to possess necessary knowledge and skills. Since intercultural communicative competence is considered the fifth skill in English language learning, culture is an important element of effective English language education. Therefore, English teachers should not only develop students' language skills but also foster cultural awareness to help them navigate different social contexts. This cultural knowledge is not supplementary content. Rather, it is fundamental to guiding students in exploring their own culture while adapting their language use for effective intercultural communication. By fostering cultural awareness alongside language skills, teachers equip learners with the necessary competencies to become engaged global citizens.

However, since English classrooms often emphasize linguistic aspects, there is a clear need for practical guidance on integrating culture into language instruction. This article presents guidelines for integrating Thai culture into English language teaching through language activities. The guidelines include setting clear objectives, selecting culturally relevant materials, and designing meaningful activities that connect learning to real-life experiences. By incorporating Thai culture into English language activities, teachers can establish meaningful connections between cultural learning and language development, which in turn fosters essential intercultural communicative competence for effective communication.
