Education in the Era of Generative AI: New Essential Skills for Cadets

Abstract

Generative AI is revolutionizing the field of education, yielding both positive and negative consequences. On the positive side, it empowers learners to engage in more personalized and in-depth learning experiences. However, it also presents challenges such as the potential for generating inaccurate information, ethical concerns, and disparities in access to technology. Recognizing the potential of AI, Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy has begun integrating these systems into its curriculum and personnel development. However, a comprehensive and well-prepared strategy is necessary to maximize benefits while minimizing negative impacts. In this educational context, the role of instructors is shifting from knowledge providers to facilitators. They are tasked with fostering the development of six essential skills in cadets as they learn to utilize generative AI:


  1. Generative AI Collaborative Skills: The knowledge and understanding to utilize Artificial Intelligence effectively;

  2. Prompt Skills: The ability to communicate with AI systems clearly and precisely to achieve desired learning outcomes;

  3. Critical Thinking Skills: Exercising sound judgment to evaluate AI-generated content and avoid falling for misinformation and hallucinations;

  4. Creative Thinking Skills: The capacity to innovate and produce original, value-added work without over-relying on automated systems;

  5. Information Literacy Skills: The ability to retrieve information from reliable sources;

  6. Data Privacy and Protection Skills: The discretion to safeguard sensitive information and refrain from inputting confidential data into AI platforms; and

By cultivating these skills, cadets will be equipped to leverage generative AI as a powerful tool for learning and professional development, ultimately contributing to the nation's progress as future leaders of the Royal Thai Army.
