The Thai Competency Test and Backwash Phenomenon Affecting Thai Language Teaching as A Foreign Langauge

Abstract
Foreign language testing has come along with the teaching of foreign languages. The aims of teaching are to spread knowledge and to enhance learner’s skill competency in order to understand a huge variety of knowledge. In contrast, testing aims to examine the results of teaching, providing a scientific instrument for measuring student’s competency. Testing can also reflect both the strength and weakness of teaching for improving teaching quality. Moreover, testing provides goal setting standards for foreign language teaching and monitors completion of relevant teaching goals to accomplish the curriculum objectives accordingly testing can affect foreign language teaching advancement and curriculum development, which reflect teaching quality to improve the learning and teaching. This is called backwash effect. There is uncommon in Thai language testing. Backwash effect can be either positive or negative. This article examines how Thai competency test can play an active, acceptable and lead backwash role in teaching Thai as a foreign language.
