The Influence of Mondo Piccolo “Don Camillo” on Red Bamboo
A Comparative Study

This research paper aims to study the influence of Mondo Piccolo “Don Camillo” by Giovannino Guareschi on the Thai novel Red Bamboo, one of M.R.Kukrit Pramoj’s masterpieces. The study reveals that literature can have an influence across countries, languages and cultures. Although both literary works satirically depict an anti-communism story, the unique social context, culture, and religion in Thai society and Italian society, as well as the different political climate makes the adaptation of foreign literature into Thailand a process of selection and modification of plot and characters in order to fit the social context, and audience’s nature and taste. In addition, such modifications can also demonstrate the author’s personal views on society and politics through his literary work.
