The Adaptation of Wooden Shophouse Facades into Hotels in the Historic Conservation District on Chai Khong Road, Chiang Khan, Loei

Abstract

Tourism development in the old town district of Chiang Khan has led to the conversion of some traditional wooden shophouses into hotels, which may affect the identity of the community. This study aimed to investigate the adaptation of wooden shophouse facades into hotels in Chiang Khan’s old town district. A qualitative research approach was employed through field surveys of 29 wooden shophouses that had been converted into hotels, together with an analysis of the characteristics of traditional wooden shophouse facades. The findings revealed that facade adaptation resulted from changes in internal spatial functions under the concept of adaptive reuse, which corresponded to the original spatial organization. The first floor was converted from a commercial area into a reception area, while the second floor was converted from a residential area into guest accommodation. Most buildings still maintained the identity of traditional wooden shophouses, such as roof forms, wooden materials, openings, awnings, and balconies. However, some buildings showed clear deviations from the original character, including circular openings and three-story extensions. This study suggests that designers and entrepreneurs should consider preserving the identity of traditional wooden shophouses, while local authorities should review or revise building regulations and formulate design guidelines that clearly specify architectural details in order to promote tourism alongside preserving the community’s original architectural values.
