Influence of Shading on Social space: A Case Study of Phraeng Phuthon Area
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the relationship between shade and outdoor activities and to identify specific patterns of social spaces in the Phraeng Phuthon area through a spatial morphological perspective combined with thermal comfort analysis. A computer program was used to simulate shadow patterns, which were overlaid at three times of day—08:00, 12:00, and 17:00—during two periods of the year, corresponding to when the sun passes over the northern and southern hemispheres. Human activity in the area was observed using gate counts, movement tracing, and snapshot recordings. The findings reveal a concentration of alternative and social activities in areas with a high average level of shade, particularly along Phraeng Phuthon Road and Phraeng Nara Road. These areas also serve as important pathways for necessary activities, connecting Atsadang Road, Bamrung Mueang Road, and Tanao Road. The presence of shade during peak sunlight hours supports the operation of local shops and restaurants, aligning with the daily routines and lifestyles of people in the area. These behavioral patterns indicate the influence of shade on the formation and use of social spaces in Phraeng Phuthon. Shaded environments promote a diversity of outdoor activities and contribute to the continued presence of long-established businesses, enhancing the vitality and sustainability of this historic urban neighborhood.
