Abstract

Structure in architecture is the crucial element that makes a structural system not only a part or an object transmitted the force, but also creates architectural shapes and spaces as well. The main purposes of this article are to (1) understand the concept of structure in architecture (2) synthesize the key points from the concept of structure in architecture to conceptual framework of contemporary bamboo architecture. By reviewing relevant literature from books, research articles, and searching for empirical data through international databases. The results found that the concept of structure in architecture is related to material properties, structural loads, geometries, and architectural space. These issues lead to a conceptual framework for studying structure in contemporary bamboo architecture; thus, there are essences or factors that considered as follows: (1) Mechanical properties of bamboo (2) shapes of structure in architecture (3) structural elements and support types (4) the pattern of using bamboo in structure and span (5) bamboo joint and Joinery. This article provides a starting point for anyone interested in studying structures in architecture, structures in bamboo architecture, structures in architecture using other materials, that have gap and areas of study in many aspects.
