Factors Affecting the Survival and Competitiveness of New Contractors: A Case Study of Contractors Located in the Area of Nakhon Udon Thani Municipality

Abstract

This research was aimed to study the factors affecting the survival and competitiveness of the new contractors located in the area of Nakhon Udon Thani Municipality. Structured Interviews were conducted with 11 respondents in charge of management level in the construction firms, selected based on a purposive sampling method. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, i.e., Percentage and Mean, together with the Relative Important Index (RII). The findings reveled that, based on the viewpoints of respondents, there were 6 critical factors affecting the survival and competitiveness of the new contractors (RII = 90.91%) , i.e., 1) ability to work together as teams, 2) fair and reasonable pricing for the conditions of each project, 3) ability of project manager, 4) timely payment to subcontractors/suppliers, 5) ability to manage cash flow of every projects on hand, and 6) reputation and track record over previous projects.
