English RomanticsAbstract
The eighteenth century was a time when the Western world faced economic and political revolution. In England, the Industrial Revolution brought about progress and prosperity to English society. Yet, the English Romantics reminded their readers of the darker side of the Revolution where a large number of people did not share in the better quality of life that the Revolution had introduced. These Romantics also showed their support of the American and the French Revolutions, believing that they were the way of releasing people from political and social bondage. They were well aware that a struggle for independence was generally accompanied by bloodshed and loss but violence, they believed, would culminate in liberty and peace, as was seen in the American Revolution. On the other hand, they were disappointed by the French Revolution, where the abolition of the monarchy was followed by a series of political conflicts that resulted in many innocent people losing their lives and political power being handed over to groups of people or even just one person, not the people at large. As well as supporting political independence, the Romantics promoted literary independence from their predecessors of the Neo-Classical Movement. They used freer poetic forms and rejected poetic language. Instead of focusing on reason, they treasured the power of imagination, the importance of nature and the dignity of common man.
