Abstract

This article aims to study the development of the historical music of ancient Greek. The result shows that ancient Greek music was largely influenced by the Babylonian civilization. The importance of Greek music also depended on the social context at the time. Especially, the relationship between Greek musical instruments and various religious rituals has existed since the Greek Bronze Age. Later, playing these instruments was blended with the philosophy, paticularly the idea of musical rhythm and mathematics of Pythagoras’s and Aristotle’s philosophies. As a result of this, Greek music was included in the curriculum for students at that time. The one who played a significant role in founding the Greek music of the time was Aristoxenus whose book left a legacy to the Roman Empire later.
