บทคัดย่อ
This paper aims to explain how the British referendum to exit the European Union has negatively affected the country’s democracy, as well as to assert that citizens in a democratic state should, under certain circumstance, refrain from casting their votes, particularly in the issues that are delicate and require in-depth understandings. The first section of the paper will criticise the undemocratibility of the accession to power of the current British prime minister, and give details about the referendum’s history. Next, the increasing role of right-wing populist parties in the UK, their effect on the populace, and the popular myths regarding the issue will be explained. In the third section, the mechanism, through which referendum of the sort should be held, will be explored. Lastly, conceptions and ideas by various theorists will be cited to support the argument of the paper, that under some circumstances, citizens should not vote. In the process of authoring the paper, facts of the issue, a number of theories, the many factors surrounding the Brexit referendum, and the author’s own thought will be used in order to effectively put forward the assertion of the paper.
