Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to study the characteristics of the research on the Thai STEM education; and (2) to analyze and compare the effect size of the Thai STEM education. The sample was 51 research reports published during 2015 – 2019, obtained from 16 universities and organizations. The research instruments were research quality evaluation forms, research characteristic coding forms for books level, and research characteristic coding forms for comparative and experimental research. The analysis of data employed descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and analysis of effect sizes using the formula of Glass et al.

The research findings were as follows: (1) The characteristics of the research to be synthesized consisted of 10 studies on project-based learning, 14 studies on problem-based learning, 14 studies on design-based learning and 13 studies on inquiry-based science learning. Most of them, 84.32 percent, were experimental research, and the dependent variable studied was learning achievement. (2) The total units of analysis consisted of 75 effect sizes and the effect size of the problem-based learning, project-based learning, inquiry-based science learning and design-based learning were 0.870, 0.690, 0.664 and 0.552 respectively. The problem-based learning model had its mean of effect size higher than those of the project-based learning model, the design-based learning model and the inquiry-based model, with the statistical significance level of .05.
