Comparisons of Language Learning Achievement and Analytical Thinking of Matthayomsuksa 3 students between Using Content – Based Instruction with Authentic Materials and Traditional Method

Abstract

The purposes of this study were: 1) to develop learning activities by using ContentBased Instruction with authentic materials and ordinary method with effectiveness standard
criterion of 75/75; 2) to compare the language learning achievement and analytical thinking
between Content - Based Instruction with authentic materials and ordinary method. The
samples consisted of 63 Mattayomsuksa 3 students from 2 schools of the Nakhonratchasima
Primary Educational Service Area Office 7, obtained using the Cluster Random Sampling
technique and derived into 2 groups from drawing lots. The experimental group is 32
Mattayomsuksa 3 students learned using Content-Based Instruction with authentic materials
and the control group is 31 Mattayomsuksa 3 students learned using ordinary method. The
research instruments consisted of : 1) Content-Based Instruction with authentic materials and
ordinary method lesson plans; 2) the learning achievement test in English with discriminating
power ranging 0.20 – 1.00 and a reliability of 0.86. The statistics used for analyzing data were
mean, percentage, and standard deviation, and Hotelling's T2 was employed for testing
hypotheses.
The results of the study were as follows:
1) Learning English by using Content - Based Instruction with authentic materials
for Mattayomsuksa 3 students had an efficiency of 80.03 / 79.58 and Traditional method for
Mattayomsuksa 3 students had an efficiency of 76.36/75.16 which were higher than the
require efficiency of 75/75.
2) The effectiveness index of both assessment data were 0.5355 and 0.3986 or
at 53.55 and 39.86 percent respectively.
3) The learning achievement and analytical thinking of students who learned
Content - Based Instruction with authentic materials is higher than students who learned the
Traditional method at .05 level of significance.
In conclusion, Content - Based Instruction with authentic materials and Traditional
method had different learning achievement and analytical thinking. Content-Based Instruction
with authentic materials affected to learning achievement and analytical thinking to be
higher than the students who learned ordinary method. These approaches should be
adapted to the learning activities for more efficiency in the future
