Abstract

Desertification is one of the international environmental problems that affected both developed and developing countries. The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is a legal measure aimed at handling the desertification directly. This convention provides a broad framework to cope with land degradation and desertification. Although this convention accomplishes an important mission in raising awareness concerning the problems associated with desertification, there are several problems in terms of implementation which include an insufficient financial support, a lack of communication and coordination among public institutes, a lack of collaboration with other relevant institutions and international environmental laws, and a lack of socio-economic concerns. Thus, the coordination among all stakeholders and a multidisciplinary approach are important for implementing and combating desertification sustainably.
