The Development of Verb-Synonyms Usage Competence of Students Majoring in Chinese Using Survey Method

Abstract

Thai learners of higher Mandarin Chinese level have frequently encountered with a usage of verb-synonyms or multiple-meaning Chinese words in Thai meaning resulting in unsuccessful speaking and writing communication. In order to solve the problem, the present research aimed at developing Chinese major students’ verb-synonyms usage. This type of research and development employed single group sample experiment with pre- and post-test. The researcher utilized survey method as research instrument and data collection. The sample, obtained by purposive sampling, were 31 Chinese major students who enrolled Chinese grammar, second semester, 2019 academic year. The research instruments were verb-synonyms achievement tests and knowledge evaluation form. The research processes were divide into five steps as the following – building basic comprehension, studying basic understanding of verb-synonyms, creating data collection instrument, summarizing, analyzing, and categorizing problems, and post-test and knowledge evaluation period.

             The findings revealed that students outperformed in the post-pest and their verb-synonyms usage development was at the high level (. This indicated that students’ could comprehend meaning, usage, and other conditions, and they could skillfully employ verb-synonyms in different language contexts. In addition, survey method approach could be effectively applied in order to let the students seek for their own problems and solutions. For further recommendation, research process should be clearly built, and the knowledge of Mandarin Chinese verb-synonyms differentiation should be explained first. Students’ adequate practices on differentiation and appropriate usage can be applied further on survey research planning of the students.
