Changes in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Old Commercial District and Development Opportunities for Historical Tourism

Abstract

     The objectives of the article is to study changes in Nakhon Ratchasima’s old commercial district. By analyzing historical data and identifying the factors that caused changes and to analyze opportunities for the development of this district as a historical tourist destination. This study can explain the changes of the district in 5 eras, including 1) the city founding era 2) the after the opening of the Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima train line era 3) the era of construction of Thao Suranaree monuments and improvement of the moat, the city wall 4) the impact of the Vietnam War era 5) development of the city era until now. The changes in politics and government, effects of war disasters, development of the transport network system and urban development policy are the main factors contributing to such change. Most commercial expansion benefits train stations, landmarks, roads and new markets. Although Nakhon Ratchasima’s old commercial district is facing a trade stagnation at present, there is an opportunity to develop the area into an historic tourist attraction Due to the urban development project such as the project to develop a master plan for the conservation and development of the old city of Nakhon Ratchasima, a Public Transport Master Plan Project and Traffic Master Plan in Nakhon Ratchasima City and surrounding areas, and a project to place electrical and communication cables underground. In addition, the annual traditional festival is organized by cooperation between the public sector, independent organizations and government agencies is a factor that promotes conservation, rehabilitation and stimulates the district's economy by organizing tourism activities.
