Weaknesses and Paradoxes of Secular Humanism Theory

Abstract

This research aims to study 1) the concepts of Secular Humanism 2) the weaknesses of Secular Humanism and 3) the paradoxes of Secular Humanism. The research methodology is textual analysis on Humanism sources. Afterward, compiling data in descriptive method. The study shows:


  1. The explicit weakness of Secular Humanism are the flexibility of this theory and its logical inconsistency as relying too much on science. As the theory tries to embraces every concept in the frame of liberty which is not practical. In addition, the explanation about existing of God, religion beliefs and abstract problems that unable to explain by science leads to the lack of logical integrity.

  2. 2. As a flexible theory, Secular Humanism proclaims the rejection of religious matters simultaneously willingly accepted religion as part of Secular Society due to the concept of human rights and freedom. This issue makes Secular Humanism as a paradoxical twist theory.

  3. Could Secular Humanism be a new religion? This question may reply in two ways. The configurations of Secular Humanism itself are practically close to religion when consider about the offerings “way of practice” to humanists in modern society. Moreover, Secular Humanism consists of basic elements that similar to the component of a religion. In this way, Secular Humanism could be a kind of religion. On the other hand, Secular Humanism could not be a religion as the theory is may unable to completely occupy human subconscious that contains beliefs and faith of their previous religion.
