Abstract

The implementation of Thai Financial Reporting Standard No. 15 (TFRS15) has changed revenue recognition principles, which may affect earnings quality and earnings management behavior of listed companies. Since revenue is a key indicator for evaluating firm performance and guiding investors’ decisions, examining the impact of such changes is important for enhancing the reliability of financial reporting in the Thai capital market. This study aims to examine the impact of earnings management before and after the adoption of Thai Financial Reporting Standard No. 15 (TFRS 15), Revenue from Contracts with Customers, in companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET100). The study focuses on firms in the Real Estate and Construction industry group compared with firms in other industry groups. The study period covers five years before and five years after the implementation of TFRS 15. The sample consists of 52 companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET100) that met the selection criteria. The independent variables include changes in revenue before and after the enforcement of TFRS 15 and industry group classification. The dependent variable is earnings management, measured based on the accrual-based model proposed by Dechow et al. (1995). The control variables include firm size, executive compensation, and audit firm size. The research methods include descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. Descriptive statistics comprise percentages, means, maximum and minimum values, and standard deviations. Inferential statistical analyses include correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and independent sample t-tests.

The results indicate that, at the 0.05 level of statistical significance, after the adoption of TFRS 15, firms in the Real Estate and Construction industry group exhibit a higher level of earnings management than firms in other industry groups. In addition, executive compensation, as a control variable, is found to have a significant impact on earnings management.
