Guidelines for Caring and Developing Life Quality of Bedridden Elderly in Community with Thai Traditional Medicine: A Case Study in Bandu Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chaing Rai Province

Abstract

This research article aimed to identify problems and needs of the bedridden elderly with dependency care in local community, and to develop care guidelines and quality of life improvement for the bedridden elderly at Ban Du subdistrict, Mueang district, Chiang Rai province. This Participatory Action Research: PAR was conducted by using in- depth interview combined with participant observation and group interview of 53 informants divided into 4 groups: community leaders, village health volunteers, Thai traditional medicine teacher and bedridden elderly relatives as well as focus group to determine the guidelines for caring for the elderly. The results showed that problems and needs of bedridden elderly in the community were of 5 aspects, including physical health, mental state, environment, economic and social. The model for the care of thebedridden elderly isconsisted of 5 parts: 1) personal hygiene care, 2) medical treatment using hand-treated procedures, 3) rehabilitation of ailments such as joint exercises and muscle strength training, 4) mental health care, and 5) caring for the living environment to be suitable for the life of the elderly.
