“Animism–Brahmanism–Buddhism” Witnesses of Curse in Sukhothai Period: Case Study of the Inscription of Pu Khun Jid Khun Jord

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to study the beliefs in Animism, Brahmanism and Buddhism in Sukhothai period by studying from the inscription of Pu Khun Jid Khun Jord. The results of this study indicated that, in Sukhothai period, people believed in Animism, Brahmanism and Buddhism. Animism was divided into ancestral spirits and ghosts protecting the land.  Brahmanism consists of the beliefs ingods, secondary gods, god creatures or inhuman beings, avatar of the gods, godlike characters as found in Sanskrit literature and the belief of nirvana. Buddhism belives inhell and heaven, threefold refuge and nirvana. There was a relation between the 3 religions influencing people in Sukhothai society. It also showed the flexibility and characteristics of the multicultural society of Sukhothai. The characteristics still exist in Thai society until now.
