The Potential to Reduce Community Wastes and the Welfare Needs of Garbage Scavengers of Muang District, Kalasin Province

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study quantity and type of solid wastes, economic value of recycling solid wastes and welfare needed for garbage scavengers at Ang Huay Kaeng landfill in Kalasin province. The quantity and solid waste composition were analyzed using standard methodology and making in-depth interviews with 16 families garbage scavengers. The results showed that, the total amount of recycled solid waste was 3,439 kilograms per week. The composition of recycled wastes which were recycled bottle, white bottle, red bottle, coca cola bottles, coffee can, colored plastic, hard plastic, color paper, cardboard and fertilizer bags was 9.78, 15.63, 14.97, 7.03, 7.53, 9.29, 10.94, 10.00, 8.48 and 5.68 %, respectively. The garbage scavengers reduced community’s solid wastes by 13,756 kilograms/week. The average economic value earned from the garbage scavengers was 3,885 baht/month/family. Scavengers needed health welfares, tetanus vaccination and spraying insecticide at the site. The scavenger played an important role in reducing solid wastes of community and increasing economic income for the community.
