The Factors Affecting Success on Waste Management in Urban Community: A Case Study of Masjid Suvarnabhumi Community, Klongsan, Bangkok

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to 1) study the factors affecting success on waste management in urban community and 2) find out the good practice guideline for community waste management. The 3 target groups of key informants were selected based on purposive sampling, which consisted of (1) 33 local people, (2) 10 representatives from the first group and (3) 7 community committees. Survey, observation, questionnaire and in-depth interview were conducted as tools. The quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed by statistical program and contents analysis respectively.

The results showed that Masjid Suvarnabhumi community is a small urban community which located at Klongsan area, Bangkok. It has a long history of more than 100 years. The landscape is also clean, beautiful and shady. In the past, the community had faced problems with waste management. Later, the people were able to solve the problem and successfully manage the waste problem in the community. Factors affecting success in waste management of the Masjid Suvarnabhumi community that resulted in the community receiving awards and being a model of urban waste management, namely 1) community leaders, 2) government agencies, 3) methods, 4) community ways, and 5) community participation. From data of this research, this can be summarized and compiled into a good practice guideline for solid waste management in the model of participation in waste management of Masjid Suvarnabhumi community. It consists of 3 important parts: (1) community, (2) government agencies, and (3) method which each part has the factors that related as holistic elements.
