The Use of Encouragement and Support in Increasing Study Retention Rates in Young Adolescent Piano Players

This case study qualitative research is aimed to study young adolescent student behavior which leads to dropping piano lesson, to study causes of dropping piano lesson and to study how teacher support and encourage young adolescent student to keep on their piano lesson. By interview 10 piano teachers, result shows the students who gave up piano lesson have these following behavior, decreasing of determination and concentration during the lesson, lessen respond toward teacher instructions, decrease practicing time, take many leave and absent. Primary reasons of dropping the lesson are extra tuition for senior school or university enrollment exam, lessen interesting toward lesson, do not enjoy practicing, parents ignore and take non-supportive role toward lesson. Thus, teachers support and encourage their student by bilaterally set learning objective, coordinate with parents, use various teaching media, use extra curriculum pieces in lesson, teach student how to practice efficiently, adjust piano teacher character, attend music concert, take grade exam, performing concert, sign up for competition, set up a studio class and music camp.
