This research aims to evaluate success and satisfaction of a "Talent Management" project of Faculty of Tropical Medicine launching during 2013-2017, for junior academic staff (with < 5 years of service). The project provided monthly premium supplement and other related academic scholarships. Human Resources Department was responsible for monitoring the progress of the participants’ achievements and satisfaction.
All eligible staff joined the project and the total number was 20 (6 new and 14 existing staff), 6 males, 14 females and their average age (mean ± SD) was 36.5 + 3.3 years. All participants contributed more scientific publications and 18 (90%) were as first author. The overall numbers of publications under the program was 23 (median; ranges = 7.50; 2.00 - 23.0). There were 27 new research projects and 19 staff (95%) were principal grant holders. All 20 participants submitted their proposal for academic placement within the targeted timeline with an average of 29.10 + 10.92 months after joining. By the end of 4 years, 18 staff (90%) were appointed to higher academic positions. Comparison between new (n=6) and original personnel (n=14), there was no difference in the number of publications (p> 0.42), although the original group published sooner (26.07 + 11.03 months vs. 36.17 + 6.49 months, p = 0.03). The questionnaire survey of 10 components received moderate-high scores (mean + SD = 3.84 + 1.01). The highest score (4.35 + 0.59) was given to the service provided by the Human Resources Department. Both studied groups had similar satisfaction on the 10 surveyed questions (p> 0.06).
The present study showed that the "Talent Management" helps support academic achievements of junior staffs in a timely manner and is well satisfied. This research suggest that (1) Talent Management can be a short-term project, but should provide a comprehensive support. (2) Monitoring of the achievements is important. (3) Effective human resource is an appropriate department to support project services. (4) A cooperative satisfaction survey should be concise and relevant. (5) Junior staff are good candidates for Talent Management. And (6) Future funding sources could be planed for "Talent Management" of other junior generations.
