Color Analysis in Impressionist Paintings and Creating Paintings to Promote Positive Emotions

Abstract

The purposes of the research were 1) to analyze visual art elements (color) of impressionism; 2) to create new paintings by using results from the analysis and 3) to study the effectivenessof the paintings created by evaluating emotional perceptionand analyzing electroencephalogram of samples while viewing the paintings. The 43 participants were both male and female with the ages between 18 and 22 years old. The research tools were the paintings that promoted positive emotions and emotion rating scale. form The results showed that the paintings used in this research were consistent with happiness the most, followed by hope and love respectively. The creation of paintings that could make the audiencefeelhappyconsisted of importantareas, integrityand compositionofelementsand the use of colors with hue values of 76-146 degrees and brightness of 21-80. The creation of paintings that could make the audience have hopes consisted of free space which had the directionof continuous movement betweenfree space and shape and theuseof colors with hue values of 0-49 degrees and brightness of 21-80. The creation of paintings that could make the audience feel love consisted of the interaction between space, distance, direction, movement, shape of material and human; the use of colors with hue values of 0-41 and 76-119 degrees and brightness of 21-80. The study of the effectiveness of the paintings created byevaluatingemotional perceptionrevealed that theaveragescores (M)of the emotions occurred from viewing the paintings promoting emotions of happiness, hope, and love were 4.31, 4.08 and 3.50 and the standard deviations (SD) were 0.78, 0.90 and0.80 respectively. Moreover, the analysisof the EEG of positive emotions inall three aspects (happiness, hope and love) showed that the left forebrain had similar values between 0.023 and 0.024 and the average of the electric wave interferon of the Alpha Brainwave at the right forebrain was 0.013, 0.017 and 0.016 respectively.
