THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH TEACHING MODEL THROUGH TASK-BASED APPROACH FOR PERSUASIVE WRITTEN COMMUNICATION FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Abstract

This study aimed to developthe English teaching model through a task-based approach for persuasive written communication for undergraduate students. This research was conducted in a form of a research and development designwhich consisted of four phasesas follows: Phase 1) studyingbasic information for developing a model 2) constructing and verifying the teaching model 3) implementingthe teaching model 4) evaluating the teaching model.  The samples were 30 students from Maejo University at Phrae Campus who volunteeredto participate in the research. The research instruments were: 1) a teaching model together witha handbook for model and a lesson plan 2) a writing test for persuasive communication3) an evaluation form of persuasive writing communication4) an evaluation form of model implementation. The collected data were analyzed by using mean, percentage, standard deviation, t-test dependent, and content analysis.


           The findings were as follows:


  1. It revealed that the appropriate model consisted of 6 components includingprinciples, objectives, contents, learning procedures, media and learning resources, evaluation and assessment tools.

  2. 2. The students’persuasive understanding and persuasive writing skill posttest were higher than that of the pretest at a statistically significant level of 0.01.

  3. 3. The persuasive outcome of most students before using the model was to create receiver’s understanding. While the persuasive outcome of most students after using the model was to lead to action.

  4. 4. The student’s persuasive written communication skills from 4 tasks showed that they were at a good and excellent level. The product leaflet had a highest mean score (= 21.33,S.D = 0.94).

 


  1. 5. The persuasive outcomes from 4 tasks revealed that the product leaflet could lead to action the most.

  2. 6. The overall result of model implementation showed that all aspects were at a high level (= 4.17, S.D = 0.70).
