AN ANALYZE THE ROLE OF UPASAKAS AND UPASIKAS IN BUDDHISM IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

Abstract

Laymen and laywomen (upasaka and upasika) in Buddhism play a crucial role in preserving and maintaining the stability of the Buddhist religion. They are considered an integral part of the Fourfold Assembly (Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, and lay community). The practice of Dhamma by lay practitioners significantly contributes to individual spiritual development as well as social stability. In addition to their role in applying the teachings in their daily lives, laymen and laywomen are now expected to support the monastic community in spreading Buddhism, participate in religious activities, and incorporate Buddhist principles into their everyday routines. In today's rapidly changing and complex society, laypeople must adapt their Dhamma practices to align with the fast-paced lifestyle and modern technology. This article aims to present the principles of Dhamma practice for lay practitioners in Buddhism and to discuss their roles that are appropriate for the current social context. It provides an analysis of the role of laymen and laywomen in a society characterized by competition and change and proposes guidelines for effectively integrating the teachings of the Buddha into daily life, enhancing understanding of the role and significance of lay practitioners in the development of both themselves and society.
