Abstract

This article aims to study and analyse the reasoning methods used in teaching Dhamma in a case study of Kisa Gotami in the Dhammapada Aṭṭhakathā. The research employed a documentary study approach, examining data from the Tipiṭaka, the Aṭṭhakathā and related academic documents. The collected data were subsequently analysed to explore the rational contents appearing in the said story. The study results revealed that reasoning in teaching Dhamma serves to guide learning through direct experience. The Buddha encouraged the sufferer to seek answers independently, leading to the realization of the truth of death and three Characteristics (Tilakkhaṇa). This process reflects empirical and analogical reasoning models aimed systematically cultivating the listener’s wisdom to realize the truth of life. Furthermore, reasoning in the Dhammapada Aṭṭhakathā plays a crucial role in connecting abstract Dhamma principles with real-life experiences, resulting in the listener’s understanding and cognitive and mental transformation.
