Abstract

The objectives of this research were to: (1) study the level of public participation in local development in Bannang Sata Subdistrict Municipality, Bannang Sata District, Yala Province; (2) compare public participation in local development in Bannang Sata Subdistrict Municipality, Bannang Sata District, Yala Province, classified according to personal factors; and (3) propose strategies for promoting public participation in local development in Bannang Sata Subdistrict Municipality, Bannang Sata District, Yala Province.

This research employed a mixed-methods research design. The sample size was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula, resulting in a sample of 389 respondents. The qualitative phase involved 20 community leaders in Bannang Sata Subdistrict Municipality who served as key informants. The quantitative research instrument was a five-point Likert scale questionnaire, whereas the qualitative research instrument consisted of in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, including percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as the independent-samples t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Qualitative data were analysed using content analysis.

The research findings revealed that:

  1. Overall, public participation in local development was at a high level. The aspects were ranked in descending order of mean scores as follows: implementation, followed by planning and decision-making, and monitoring and evaluation. The benefit aspect was at a moderate level. 2. There were no statistically significant differences in public participation in local development among people with different genders, occupations, and educational levels. 3. The strategies for promoting public participation in local development were as follows: (1) raising public awareness and strengthening community consciousness to create a sense of ownership and shared responsibility for projects; (2) providing opportunities for people to express their opinions without limitations or pressure; (3) providing knowledge and information through modern communication channels to ensure that people have comprehensive access to information; (4) supporting occupational groups and strengthening the community economy; (5) promoting unity and developing cooperative networks; and
    (6) developing the potential of community leaders.
