Factors Related to Health Threat Prevention Behaviors Among Garbage Collectors Under Municipalities in Nonthaburi Province

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the level of health literacy and preventive behaviors among municipal waste collectors in Nonthaburi Province regarding health threats. It also examined the relationships between personal factors, occupational health hazards, and health literacy, as well as their impact on preventive behaviors. A cross-sectional study design was utilized. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by 242 waste collectors and analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-Square and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient. The results indicated that over half of the participants (51.2%) had a moderate level of health literacy regarding the prevention of occupational health threats. In comparison, 66.1% exhibited a high level of preventive behaviors. Significant factors associated with these preventive behaviors, at the 0.05 level, included educational attainment, exposure to occupational health hazards (specifically work-related accidents and psychosocial factors), and the application of health information. The study recommends that relevant agencies implement clear and stringent policies regarding occupational safety and work environments. Additionally, organizing training programs, relationship-building activities, and health literacy promotion initiatives is essential. These measures will encourage waste collectors to engage in preventive behaviors against occupational health threats consistently. Furthermore, it is essential to monitor and evaluate these preventive behaviors continuously.
