Conditions and results of reading habit enhancement of students in schools under the Office of Basic Education Commission (OBEC)

Abstract
This research paper aimed to report the finding of conditions and results of reading habit enhancement of students in schools under the Office of Basic Education Commission (OBEC), which was a part of enhancement of reading habits of students and school libraries under the Office of Basic Education Commission. Mixed methods was used in this study to collected data from 16 schools under OBEC. Interview questions, a questionnaire were used to find out the conditions and results of reading habit enhancement in sixteen prototype schools under OBEC that enhance reading habits in different educational areas. Documentary analysis and field studies at the schools to explore the conditions and results of the reading habit enhancement were conducted. The data were collected during August 2018-January 2019, and analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and content analysis. The research findings were as follows.
The findings revealed the conditions and results of reading habit enhancement among students in schools under OBEC were at a high level. For the aspect of the opinions towards the project of the students in the prototype schools under OBEC, in overall, was at a high level. The best practice to enhance reading habits among students in the prototype schools under OBEC included 1) Schools paid attention to enhance reading habits; they had campaigns for continuous reading enhancement by using activities as a core, providing various media that attracted students to realize the importance and benefits of reading, more needs of reading motivated by using various forms of reinforcement. In those schools, there were role models and good examples of how to create reading habits. Moreover, agencies and related parties such as provincial agencies, private sectors, and parents also supported the students to enhance students’ reading habits. 2) Reading sources and reading resources were developed to facilitate the enhancement of reading habits among students, by developing libraries to be quality learning resources for enhancing reading habits, and developing books and other media to facilitate reading habits. 3) Skills and reading ability were developed to enhance reading habits in teaching and learning, by emphasizing reading and integrating reading in all subjects. Additionally, reading activities were arranged to allow students to apply knowledge from reading.
