Abstract

This quantitative research aimed to (1) study the attitudes of Hatyai University students towards the elderly, and (2) compare the levels of these attitudes among students at Hatyai University. The sample consisted of 190 first-year students from the Faculty of Education and Liberal Arts at Hatyai University. The research instrument was a 30-item questionnaire measuring students' attitudes towards the elderly. The data were analyzed using frequency, mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, and multiple comparisons. The findings revealed that (1) overall, students' attitudes towards the elderly were at a moderate level ( =3.26, S.D.=1.01) When considering specific aspects, students' attitudes were high in the belief aspect ( =4.11, S.D.=1.03) and the role aspect  ( =3.57, S.D.=1.01). (2) The results of comparing the attitudes of students toward the elderly revealed that students with different relationship patterns with the elderly exhibited significantly different levels of attitudes at the .05 level in only three areas: physical aspects, personal characteristics, and adaptation. When testing for pairwise differences using Scheffe's method (1953), it was found that students with varying relationship patterns toward the elderly had different levels of attitudes that were not statistically significant at the .05 level.
