Abstract

Bat flower (Tacca chantrieri Andre) is a tropical herb which has been used traditionally as food and medicine. Previous studies indicated that saponins from this plant’s rhizome exerted analgesic and anti-inflammatory actions. Anti-inflammatory gel and spray containing the crude extract from this plant have been prepared. However, this kind of production needs the appreciable fund and technology that cannot be handled by impoverished layman. This research was thus established to obtain a simple method for using the bat flower rhizome to relieve inflammation of muscles. Bat flower rhizomes were analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and used for the preparation of potion containing 0.6% saponin. The clinical trial of this potion in volunteers with ached muscles revealed the satisfactory outcomes. The potion preparation needs only household utensils such as spoon, bottle, stove and towel. Finally, the workshop was held to transfer the knowledge to the village healthcare volunteers in order to apply this treatment confidently.
