Choices under Contract Farming System of Organic Farmers in Nakhon Pathom Province

Abstract
This qualitative research aims to explore choices of organic farmers in Nakorn Pathom province in responding to the contract farming system. In-depth interview with 21 households of organic farmers who have experience in organic farming under contract farming system was used in data collecting process. The research showed that these farmers reacted with the system in different ways. Some farmers decided to give up their role in contract farming to emancipate themselves from the exploitation and tried to find the most beneficial choice, while others tried to adjust to survive by negotiating and handling with the companies exploiting them. How these farmers managed the situation depends on the assessment of their resources, both in groups and at a personal level. In order for the farmers to be self-reliant in such systems, they need to be provided with enough resources in knowledge, networks, and essential rules relating to organic farming and contract farming system.
