Model of Ageing Society Management at Mountain Area in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture, Japan

Abstract

The research aimed at studying the management of ageing society in Shimanto city, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Key informant composed of 13 elderly people, 1 staff from local government and 7 staff from social welfare organization and volunteer organization. The research tools were documentary research, interview, and non-participated observation. Data analyzed and checked up the accuracy by meeting among researchers and Japanese coordinators. The research found that Shimanto city is a small town located surrounded mountains in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. The portion of the elderly people in this town is increasing as they are living longer. Therefore, elderly society management in this area used a small-scale organization and integrated collaboration working among local government, welfare sector and volunteer organization. The place is designed for the elderly, children, disabled and poor people based on volunteer mind and community care. Local government built the community learning center for elderly to use for making tafu, meeting, welcoming guests and contributing news and activities for the elderly. The elderly people here are active aging, self-reliance and interdependent among group.
