An Interlanguage Pragmatic Study of Speech Acts of Gratitude by Chinese Learners of Thai: A Case Study of Acknowledgments in Thai Theses

Abstract
This study investigates the speech acts of gratitude produced by Chinese learners of Thai within the framework of interlanguage pragmatics. Data were collected from 230 thesis acknowledgments, comprising 62 from Chinese learners of Thai, 100 from native Thai writers, and 68 from native Mandarin Chinese writers. The data were analyzed to identify linguistic strategies and compared using the chi -square statistical method, with an explanation of pragmatic transfer trends. The findings revealed that all three groups predominantly used direct gratitude strategies over indirect and supportive strategies. In terms of frequency, Chinese learners of Thai employed direct gratitude strategies significantly less often than native Thai writers but similarly to native Mandarin Chinese writers, indicating pragmatic transfer. However, Chinese learners of Thai employed indirect gratitude strategies significantly more than both native Thai and native Mandarin Chinese writers. They also employed supportive strategies more frequently than native Thai writers but significantly less often than native Mandarin Chinese writers, reflecting the influence of their interlanguage in the target language. These findings enhance understanding of the linguistic behavior of Chinese learners of Thai and provide practical implications for language instruction to improve their pragmatic competence in Thai.
