Nirat Huai Lerk: A Narative of Lottery Players at the End of the Century 1916

Abstract
This research article aims to investigate thoughts, beliefs, and impacts of lottery gambling on Thai people in Nai Fueang’s Nirat Huai Lerk. The findings revealed that: 1) lottery (from lottery factory to government legal lottery) presents the origin of lottery ticket purchase, lottery playing instructions, and the cancellation of the lottery factory; 2) lottery gamblers:behaviors related to thoughts and beliefs of the locals that indicate that the gamblers have superstitious beliefs about dreams, destiny, and previous life; 3) effects of playing lottery clarifies impacts on lottery gambling, including economic aspect, social aspect, and psychological aspect; and 4) persuasive strategies through content reveals the emphasis on emotional problems and citing notions of Buddhism while the persuasive strategies through language use shows the use of ambiguity, personification, and informal language. All in all, Nirat Huai Lerk is folk literature that denotes the grief of villagers for the cancellation of the lottery factory.
