Process of Making Thon Chatree by Master Suwan Photipin

Abstract

The thesis on the production process of Thon Chatree by a technician named Suwan Phothipin aims to study the life history of Mr. Suwan Phothipin and the process of creating Thon Chatree, including the factors affecting the sound quality of Thon Chatree that he created. The study’s findings demonstrated that he was raised in the province of Ang Thong and learned how to build the drums from his father Mr. Sawang Phothipin. He has accumulated experience and developed the quality of drum making by taking into consideration 3 things: good shape, loud sound, and durability. The 30 steps in Mr. Suwan’s process for making Thon Chatree are broken down into 16 steps for boring and turning the puppets and 14 steps for making the drumhead. There are many details in every phase. from the selection of fresh cowhide and padauk wood with just the right level of moisture. This requires expertise and experience in solving immediate problems in every step. The above reasons all resulted in Mr.Suwan’s Thon Chatree having a clear identity, which is a small puppet pod but still has the unique of sound of the Tone Chatree and it is also appropriate for usage in practical situations.
