Main Article Content
Abstract
Paragraph writing is an important skill that focuses on the pre-writing step which emphasizes on gathering and organizing ideas. Outlining is one of effective strategies that helps students organize the ideas systematically and leads to effective writing. Thus, the purpose of this study was 1) to compare self-awareness of using outlining strategy of EFL students before and after learning outlining strategy and 2) to compare the paragraph writing ability of EFL students before and after learning outlining strategy. The samples of the study were 44 English major students from a public university, using the purposive sampling technique. The main research instruments were the 5-point Likert scale questionnaire relating to self-awareness of using outlining strategy and a sub¬jective test of paragraph writing. Descriptive and t-test statistics were employed for data analysis. Mean scores, standard deviations and t value were reported as results. The findings showed that 1) before learning outlining strategy, the students had self-awareness at moderate level, whereas their self-awareness was identified at high level after learning the strategy, and 2) the students’paragraph writing ability after learning the strategy was significantly increased at .05 level. It can be summarized that teaching outlining strategy can develop students’ self-awareness of its usage and the students’ paragraph writing ability; therefore, students need to be taught and practiced outlining strategy.
