Productive Ageing of the Elderly Living in Island Border Areas between Thailand – Malaysia

Abstract

This research article aims to study elderly engagement in productive ageing activities. The research employed qualitative data collection methods covered in-depth interview and participant observation. The key informants were 60 persons aged 60 years or above, residing in island border areas between Thailand-Malaysia. The result found that the elderly have been engaging in productive ageing activities, classified into 2 categories: (1) Business activities, the elderly mainly engaged in coastal fisheries, community product enterprises, and/or community-based tourism (2) Service activities, the elderly mainly engaged in family, social and/or religious services. These research findings reflect that the elderly are potential for productive ageing activities benefit self, family, and the society.
